Why Do Canadian Households Choose Safe Paw Pet-Safe Deicer?

Canadian winters can bring ice to driveways, walkways, steps, decks and other areas around the home. Safe Paw is a pet-safe, salt-free and chloride-free ice melt designed for families looking to manage winter ice while considering their pets, children and property.

Pet-Safe Ice Melter for Canadian Homes

Safe Paw provides an alternative to traditional salt and chloride-based ice melters. Its formula is designed with pets and families in mind, making it suitable for areas where children and animals walk and play.

Helps Protect Concrete, Pavers, Decks & Roofs

Choosing the right ice melt is also important for the surfaces around your home. Safe Paw’s non-corrosive, chloride-free formula is designed for use on properly cured concrete, pavers, Trex and other composite decking, and roof, helping Canadian homeowners manage ice without the corrosive effects associated with traditional chloride-based deicers.

Developed Because Safer Winter Care Was Needed

Safe Paw was developed in 1998 out of necessity because the ice melt products available at the time did not meet our standards for safety.

As part of the Gaia family of products, Safe Paw continues Gaia’s mission to develop winter products that reflect our commitment to people, pets, property and sustainability.

Pets and Paws

Non-toxic and chloride-free, Safe Paw helps protect sensitive paws from the irritation associated with traditional salt-based ice melts and is designed to be safe around pets, including accidental ingestion.

Children and Families

Designed for homes where children and pets share outdoor spaces, Safe Paw helps manage winter ice on walkways, steps and entrances while supporting a safer environment for the whole family.

Property and Vegetation

Non-corrosive, chloride-free formula is designed for suitable concrete and common outdoor surfaces, while helping homeowners care for nearby lawns, plants and surrounding landscaped areas.

Winter Performance

Built for harsh winter conditions, it works at extremely low temperatures and helps prevent ice from reforming on treated surfaces, supporting safer access on driveways, walkways, steps and entrances.

Before You Apply Safe Paw

A few simple checks can help you use ice melt effectively while caring for the surface underneath.

01
Check the Surface Do not apply ice melt to concrete that is less than 12 months old. Test a small area if you are unsure how a surface will respond.
02
Clear Loose Snow Remove fresh or loose snow first so the product can reach the remaining ice more directly.
03
Apply Lightly Sprinkle Safe Paw across the icy area rather than heavily covering the surface. The concentrated formula is designed to use less than traditional salt.
04
Check During Winter Weather Inspect treated areas as conditions change and reapply only where additional treatment is needed.

For unusual, delicate or specialty surfaces, check the surface manufacturer's recommendations before applying any ice-melting product.

How Does Safe Paw Compare with Rock Salt and Chloride-Based Ice Melt?

Safe Paw takes a different approach to winter ice control. It is 100% salt and chloride-free, while rock salt is sodium chloride and many conventional ice melts use calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or other chloride salts.

Quick answer: Rock salt is itself a chloride-based deicer. In this comparison, “rock salt” refers specifically to sodium chloride, while the “chloride-based ice melt” column represents products commonly made with calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or similar salts. Safe Paw contains no salt or chlorides.

Comparison FAQ

Safe Paw, Rock Salt & Chloride Ice Melt Questions

Is rock salt a chloride-based ice melt?
Yes. Rock salt is sodium chloride. Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and potassium chloride are other chloride salts commonly used in winter deicing products.
What is the main difference between Safe Paw and rock salt?
Safe Paw is formulated without salt or chlorides. Traditional rock salt is sodium chloride. This difference affects considerations such as paw contact, corrosion, concrete exposure and chloride runoff.
Does Safe Paw contain calcium chloride or magnesium chloride?
No. Safe Paw is 100% chloride-free and does not use sodium chloride, calcium chloride or magnesium chloride as its deicing base.
How cold does Safe Paw work?
Safe Paw states that it works at temperatures down to approximately −19°C / −2°F. Rock salt generally becomes much less effective below approximately −9°C / 15°F. Some chloride deicers, particularly calcium chloride, can function at lower temperatures.
Can Safe Paw be used on concrete?
Safe Paw is designed for properly cured concrete. The manufacturer recommends waiting at least 12 months after concrete is poured before using any ice melt, including Safe Paw. Test a small area when surface compatibility is uncertain.
Is “pet friendly” the same as chloride-free?
Not necessarily. A product marketed as pet friendly may still contain calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or another salt. Checking the ingredient list is the most direct way to determine whether an ice melt contains chlorides.
